Darfur Groups Urge World Leaders Not To Attend Olympic Opening Ceremonies ! What do you think?
Leading Darfur advocacy organizations today said world leaders should not attend the Beijing Olympics opening ceremonies in August. In a joint statement, the Save Darfur Coalition, ENOUGH Project, STAND: A Student Anti-Genocide Coalition, Genocide Intervention Network and Dream for Darfur, denounced China’s continued enabling of Sudan’s destructive campaign against Darfuri civilians.
The groups – while emphasizing that they are not calling for any nation, athlete, or corporate sponsor to boycott the sporting events of the Olympics – questioned how President Bush and other heads of state could enjoy the pageantry of the opening ceremonies while Darfuris continue to suffer.
Why? This is so stupid. The only ones this hurts are the athletes that attend the stupid opening ceremony. I know the Olympics are a very political event but it is theoretically not supposed to be. It is supposed to bring the nations of the world together. The only reason for a country to pull out of the Olympics is if that country believes its athletes or spectators are in danger in the host country. If the US pulls out of the Olympics it should be altogether or nothing. If China is so bad why are the Olympics there to being with? If the world wants to do something about Darfur they can. It is called the UN. It is completely worthless origination but theoretically it was established just for this type of situation. Here is a tip. Any politician that supports the US not attending the opening ceremony is a phony that really cares nothing about Darfur. Any politician that is dishonest enough to think boycotting some stupid ceremony is going to have any effect in Darfur is either a liar or a fool. This goes for both parties.
